Structure & Sessions

How Often Are the Sessions?

The Toronto Hawks Soccer Club operates two seasonal programs annually:

Summer Season: June 1st – End of August

Fall-Winter Season: October 1st – End of April/May

  • Players can choose between 1 to 4 sessions per week, depending on their schedule and interest. If you're unsure how many sessions are the right fit, our team is happy to provide guidance—please contact us for assistance.
  • For players aged 8 and older, the first three sessions include an evaluation to ensure balanced team formation. The training structure for these age groups includes one practice day and one match day per week.
  • Younger age groups (4-7 years old) follow a different session structure designed to introduce soccer in a fun and engaging way while developing fundamental movement skills.Click here to see full details on session structure for ages 4-7 in the ‘Who’s This Program For?’ section of our website.

All sessions take place on weekdays (Monday to Friday) with two available time slots:

6:15 PM – 7:15 PM

7:15 PM – 8:15 PM

  • For outdoor programs, we provide four different locations in the summer, while the fall and winter seasons take place at two indoor venues. You can find all location details in the Facilities section on our website.

What’s a Typical Session Like?

Each practice session is carefully structured to ensure maximum engagement, skill development, and fun while preparing players for game day.

 Opening Circle & Energy Boost

We start every session by gathering players in a circle around the coach at the center of the field. This moment is crucial—it sets the tone for the entire session. Our coaches bring passion and energy, inspiring players to approach challenges with confidence and a growth mindset. A coach’s presence is more than just instruction; it's about changing how kids perceive problem-solving through soccer.

Warm-Up: Preparing the Mind & Body

Warm-ups are a non-negotiable part of our training. They teach players an essential lesson: before any activity—physical or not—proper preparation leads to better performance.

Our warm-ups have two key goals:

  1. Physical Readiness: Prevent injuries and improve movement efficiency.
  2. Mental Focus: Train discipline and concentration before diving into drills.

We incorporate different warm-up styles:

  1. Team running & dynamic stretches for mobility and flexibility.
  2. Game-based warm-ups that introduce agility and reaction training in a fun way.
  3. Situational drills that mimic real-game movements.

 Skill Development & Drills

After warm-ups, we move into technical and tactical training, which evolves throughout the season:

  1. Early in the season: Foundational skills (ball control, passing, dribbling).
  2. Mid-season: Tactical awareness and decision-making under pressure.
  3. Late-season: Competitive drills that simulate real match situations.

We progressively level up the difficulty of drills, mixing individual exercises with team-based competitions to challenge players and keep engagement high. Every drill has a specific purpose, helping players absorb the game’s fundamentals while improving coordination, teamwork, and confidence.

 End-of-Session Scrimmage

To apply what they’ve learned, every session ends with a small-sided match. Coaches use this game to:

  1. Observe how well players apply their skills in real-time.
  2. Provide on-the-spot coaching—pausing the game to correct positioning or decision-making.
  3. Help players prepare for game day, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident when competing.

Game Day: Where Training Meets Competition

Once a week, players compete in official matches within the club. Each age group typically has 4 to 8 teams, with 11-12 players per team.

Game day details:

Professionally marked fields, complete with boundary flags and official-sized nets.

Certified referees from the Toronto Soccer Association to provide a real match experience.

Two 30-minute halves, giving players enough time to compete and showcase their progress.

  • All match results are recorded in our system, and at the end of the program, teams play in a final festival to determine rankings. Players compete for 1st to 6th place, but beyond winning or losing, they learn an essential life lesson: As long as they give their best effort, they are always winners.
  • Every participant receives a medal for their dedication and hard work, and a trophy as a lasting memory of their journey

Why This Structure Works

This blend of weekly practice + competitive game play is the most effective modern training method. Players develop skills in training and then apply them in game settings, reinforcing learning and accelerating growth. This structure ensures players become:

Technically sound with strong fundamental skills.

Tactically aware—understanding team strategy and decision-making.

Mentally resilient, learning to handle both success and setbacks.

Our program is more than just soccer—it’s about building confident, strong-minded players who carry these lessons beyond the field.
